At Fremont Kid's Academy we encourage the interaction of multi-aged groups of the children in our care for this very reason. Both age groups are benefiting from the interactions and both age groups are receiving more socialization than they would be in age specific groups.
Cooperating is a very advanced state of play in a preschool setting. Achieving this state is usually observed in children older than three years. Children younger than that just don't possess the awareness of others required to actually cooperate. However, there are exceptions to every rule and one of those exceptions can be found when older children are modelling cooperative behavior for younger children. Here a three year old and a five year old are working together to play with this toy when along comes a one year old who begins to mimic their behavior.
